Rachel Bell

Founder and Former CEO of Shine Communications

Rachel Bell is considered a true legend in public relations (PR) in the UK. She will tell her story of how she founded and grew Shine Communications, which was the foundation to build an array of businesses within and outside of the PR roam. Rachel eventually founded or co-founded a total of 9 companies, some of which already sold, others are still going strong and are built to be sold eventually. She turned around and grew a small precision engineering company, coached countless clients to successfully use her management principles to become successful, invested in numerous start-up companies as an angel investor, wrote a book (“Start-Ups, Pivots and Pop-Ups: How to Succeed by Creating Your Own Business”), and is President of one of the most successful business angel networks in the UK (E100 Club @ London Business School).

In her story, Rachel will especially share how businesses can use building an employee led culture, creating operational excellence and enabling a sustainable exit can create long-term success. She has proven her method for business success not only within her own companies, but also helped others as coach or investor to do the same. You do not want to miss the story of Rachel Bell.

Why Build-to-Sell?

Many owners of companies want to sell their business eventually, or they are required to sell since their investors are looking for an exit at some point. The issue is that most businesses that sell are not adequately prepared, resulting in lower financial returns and undesired results. An optimized exit is not just an event, it is a process that starts years before and continues well into the transition to the new owner. It usually takes several years to properly build a company for an exit. Such a Build-to-Sell process can also achieve much more than just higher financial returns, including securing the future of the employees after the exit (“Sustainable Exit”).

Intellectual assets are usually key value drivers in strategic transactions, including but not limited to exits. We distinguish between technology intellectual assets (with patents and trade secrets as their protection mechanisms), brand intellectual assets (with trademarks as their protection mechanism) and operational excellence (with culture as a key driver or limitation). The importance of each intellectual asset class depends on the individual case study. Since operational excellence plays a particularly important role when preparing a business for an exit (Build-to-Sell), we put a special emphasis on this factor in our case study presentations and discussions.
